Volunteer Spotlight: Virginia Pearson
By: Mia LaBrier, Program Coordinator
Virginia Pearson is the mother of a participant at Mason Ridge Elementary. This was her first season participating in GOTR as a coach/site liaison and she did an AMAZING job! She truly embraced each of the GOTR Core Values and encouraged every girl on her team to recognize their own strength.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am born and raised in Los Angeles, California. I discovered running in 4th grade and since then haven't stopped.
Why did you choose to volunteer/get involved with GOTR?
My daughter participated in the program in the fall of 2018, and she was the one that asked me if I would volunteer for the following year. So, I did!
What is the most rewarding thing about Girls on the Run?
EVERYTHING! The best part about GOTR-STL is providing an environment for all girls to be comfortable in challenging themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally. It was amazing seeing each individual gain confidence in themselves, learn skills that help them navigate everyday challenges, both within themselves and in the world around them, and taking ownership of spreading their star power!
How has GOTR-STL impacted your life?
The program is a great reminder how each one of us has a choice every moment throughout the day to either be a cloud or share our star power. That's 86,400 seconds in a day. Imagine the change/impact one can have with every second of one's day if one chooses sharing one's star power, with thyself and others.
What is your favorite memory from your time with GOTR?
Seeing each girl walk a little taller, with their head up high and a sparkle in their eyes as they completed their 5k run. Each shared the same journey, but completed it in their own way...priceless!
Why would you recommend others get involved with Girls on the Run?
Every individual has the ability to spark someone's star power, and it is profound when that spark brightens our younger generation to do the same for themselves and others.
