Press Release: St. Louis Treasurer Tishaura O. Jones Named Honorary Race Chair for Girls on the Run St. Louis 5k
St. Louis Treasurer Tishaura O. Jones was named the honorary race chair for the Girls on the Run 5k race on Saturday, Nov. 12, starting at Soldiers' Memorial in downtown St. Louis.
The largest timed 5k race in Missouri and the 10th largest 5k in the United States, the biannual Girls on the Run St. Louis (GOTR-STL) 5k Race benefits the Girls on the Run Scholarship Fund. This year, more than 70 percent of participating girls will receive full or partial scholarships totaling nearly $366,000. Nearly 6,000 runners are expected to participate. Of these, 2,400 are girls who are participating in GOTR this fall across 23 counties in Missouri and Illinois.
“Girls on the Run St. Louis is honored to have Treasurer Jones part of our 5k celebration this fall season as we embark on celebrating 15 years of empowering more than 40,000 girls," said Courtney Berg, executive director of Girls on the Run St. Louis. "Her commitment to and leadership in the St. Louis community and the state of Missouri is an example to girls across the region."
Jones is the first woman to hold the office of treasurer in the history of St. Louis. While serving as a Missouri State Representative from 2008-2012, Jones was the first African American and first female assistant minority floor leader. As treasurer she opened the city’s first Office of Financial Empowerment and launched the College Kids program establishing a college savings account for every kindergartner enrolled in St. Louis City public and charter schools.
“Girls on the Run is about empowering girls for a lifetime of healthy living, which is why I’m excited to be the honorary race chair of this season’s race,” said Jones. “By committing to and training for this race, these girls are learning how discipline, hard work and perseverance will help them meet their goals, both on the race course and in life.”
Runners and walkers can join Jones in her support of Girls on the Run St. Louis by participating in the 5k run or one-mile fun run. The fun run begins at 8 a.m. and the 5k starts at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 12. Registration is $25 for adults through Nov. 4, $30 from Nov. 5 through 11 and $35 on race day. Children under 12 may register for $15 through Nov. 4, $20 from Nov. 5 through 11 and $25 on race day.
