A Message from our Executive Director Regarding Program and 5k
March 25, 2020
Dear Girls on the Run St. Louis Community Member,
On behalf of all of us at Girls on the Run St. Louis, my gratitude for being part of our mission and my sincere hope that you and your family are healthy and safe as we navigate the challenges and uncertainties of COVID-19. We have been working tirelessly to continue to support the physical, mental and emotional health of our Girls on the Run and dedicated volunteers and families.
After careful consideration of all options and consultation with public health leaders in our community, we have made significant decisions related to our program delivery and the Girls on the Run St. Louis 5k on May 9, 2020. We understand that now, more than ever, girls need the support to navigate their physical and emotional health through somewhat scary circumstances, as well as the opportunity to feel connected during a time of social distancing. It is with all of this in mind that we are sharing the following:
GOTR at Home
Please know that we intend to honor the commitment made to every one of our Girls on the Run. We have built a website that houses weekly Girls on the Run at Home activities for our Girls on the Run and Heart & Sole participants, in addition to videos and other relevant activities. Coaches and parents/guardians have received the password to access this page, which will be updated regularly and will provide opportunities for our participants to continue moving, thinking, and being a Girl on the Run while at home.
In "recognizing our responsibility to be intentional in our decision making," we are transitioning our Girls on the Run St. Louis 5k, scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2020, to a virtual 5k experience. Although it will no longer be in person, the 5k is still very much happening in our community - for our girls, for our families, and for those who love Girls on the Run! The virtual 5K will include the opportunity for virtual runners to complete the 3.1 mile distance in whatever environment makes the most sense for them during this time of social distancing (i.e. neighborhood loop, in a park, on a treadmill, etc.). Each runner will receive a personalized race bib, certificate of 5k completion, a medal mailed to home addresses, and other sponsor benefits. To learn more about the details, click here.
Power of One Gala
It is with great disappointment that I also share our Power of One Gala, scheduled for April 30th, has been cancelled. In addition to being a crucial source of funds for Girls on the Run St. Louis, the Gala has been a time to celebrate our Girls on the Run and the people that make our program and community special. We will honor our Energy Award recipients in 2021 - save the date for April 8, 2021!
What You Can Do Now
Over 3,500 girls across the St. Louis region began the season with us - one of our largest seasons ever - and we remain steadfast in our commitment to helping all of these Girls on the Run reach the finish line this spring. Already this season, we have provided $290,000 in scholarship assistance because we know the critical need for this program in her life now.
Changes to the Power of One Gala and 5k create a critical loss in revenue for our organization at a time when we have incurred a number of costs at the beginning of the season. This has forced us to put unprecedented plans in place to ensure continued operations and guarantee that we can serve St. Louis area girls now, in the fall season, and beyond. I am hopeful that as a dedicated supporter who knows the value of this program in our community you will consider making a gift towards the scholarship or general operating fund of Girls on the Run St. Louis to address this need. By doing so, you are ensuring HER experience is not interrupted and she continues to grow in her understanding of self, learn the value of relationships and teamwork, and recognize how she can shape the world at large.
I want to personally thank you for your support of our mission and providing outstanding leadership for our Girls on the Run. I am confident that we will, as our Girls on the Run show us, move forward together.
Courtney Berg, LCSW
We encourage you to connect with us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, as we will post additional ways to engage with the Girls on the Run community in the coming days and weeks. In this time of social distancing, we know that finding strength in our connectedness is an important GOTR lesson and core value for all of us to practice!
