GOTR-STL Intern Neena and "The Map"

Intern (and coach) Neena Patel and "The Map"

When I first learned about Girls on the Run during my undergraduate years, I thought it was just a running program that I would never really be a part of -- after all, running really isn’t my strength. Little did I know that just a few years later GOTR-STL would be a huge part of my life and education.

As the GOTR-STL public health intern, I have a lot of projects and responsibilities, but the biggest project that I have taken on is “The Map.”  When I began my journey with GOTR in June, Courtney (Executive Director) and Lisa (Program Director) asked me if I would work on a community mapping project.  They wanted to see exactly where our participating girls are in the 23 counties we serve. What I thought would be a simple project turned into a huge multi-layered data system that we regularly work to improve.

The map shows us where our teams have been and where they are today. It also gives us a snapshot of the challenges and barriers that one team in one of the many GOTR communities might face. The map gives us the tools to better understand our GOTR communities and provide opportunities for learning how to serve them more effectively. It will also help us determine where and how we can grow our program in a thoughtful, sustainable way.

Even though this map was a huge undertaking and learning experience for me, it could not have been done without the support of our amazing GOTR staff. The incredible women here have shown me the importance of teamwork. I have been so lucky to have been able to work and learn with these amazing, strong, and intelligent women!
