Why did you choose to volunteer/get involved with GOTR-STL?

My best friend’s daughter was in the program about 7 years ago and asked if I'd run the race with her because she had just had a baby so I did. After the race her daughter told her she would only continue to do the program if she could get me to come coach at her school…I did and now she is a Sophomore in high school who I have help be a run buddy on race day. :)

What is the most rewarding thing about Girls on the Run?

Being able to discuss the lessons with the girls and seeing their light bulbs go on when they get it and then hearing them use the lesson techniques at school.

How has GOTR-STL impacted your life?

I coach at my daughter’s school and have run with her in a few of the races and have been able to see her struggle through to the finish line. I love that I am the one to encourage her through each step and tell her how amazing she is and that all she has to do is set her mind to it and she can do it. It is so powerful for girls to hear this, especially at a young age.

Favorite memory?

After the 5k [in November] I went up to one of the girls who had finished and asked her how she felt and she was smiling from ear to ear and proudly said I FEEL AWESOME!!!

Why would you recommend others get involved with Girls on the Run?

Truly amazing to watch girls transform from when they start the program to race day and even beyond to see them come back as a JR Coach or have them help be running buddies.

What are your hopes for the future of Girls on the Run St. Louis as an organization?

My hope is for the program to be a part of every school, just like technology or any specialty class so girls can experience getting out of their box and being ALRIGHT with who they are.
